Night Before Flight Checklist: 6 Things You Must Do

The night before your flight doesn’t have to be a stressful scramble. A little prep goes a long way — and these six habits can make the difference between a smooth departure and a chaotic morning. Whether you’re hopping on a quick domestic flight or heading overseas, run through this checklist before you hit the pillow.
1. Go Through Your Packing List

If you don’t have a packing list, make one now — seriously. Even if your flight isn’t until late the next day, checking off your list the night before saves you from last-minute panic. You’ll sleep better knowing everything is handled. No one needs that “did I forget my passport?” anxiety at 5 AM.
2. Charge All Your Devices

Plug in everything overnight — phone, tablet, earbuds, smartwatch. All of it. You never know what delays or long layovers might pop up, so starting with a full charge is non-negotiable.
Better yet, toss a portable power bank in your carry-on. If outlets are scarce at the airport (and they often are), you’ll be the hero of your travel group. Look for one with multiple outputs so you can charge a few devices at once.
3. Screenshot Your Boarding Pass

Don’t wait until you’re standing in line at the airport to pull up your boarding pass. Airline apps go down. Signals drop. Phones die. It happens more than you’d think.
Take a screenshot the night before and save yourself the headache. Here’s how:
- iPhone: Press the side button and volume up at the same time. Your screenshot saves to Photos.
- Android: Hold the power button and volume down simultaneously. Find it in your gallery.
Done. Easy. No excuses.
4. Fill Up Your Gas Tank

This one sounds obvious, but it catches people off guard more often than you’d think. Running low on gas when you’re already running late for the airport is a nightmare you can avoid entirely. Fill up the night before — and top it off more than you think you need, just in case you hit unexpected traffic.
5. Pack for Germs

Planes are germ factories — there’s no sugarcoating it. Studies have found that airplane tray tables are among the dirtiest surfaces you’ll encounter, even worse than the bathroom. The moment you sit down, wipe that tray down with sanitizing wipes.
Keep a small hand sanitizer and a few wipes in an easy-to-reach pocket of your carry-on. It’s also smart to give your immune system a boost before flying — think Vitamin C, Zinc, and something like Airborne or Zicam if you feel a tickle coming on.
6. Hydrate — For Real This Time

Yes, you’ve heard this before. No, most people don’t actually do it. Start drinking plenty of water in the 48 hours leading up to your flight, and aim for about eight ounces per hour once you’re in the air. The cabin air is extremely dry and dehydration sneaks up on you fast.
If plain water bores you, try infused water with fruit — pineapple, cucumber, citrus — whatever keeps you sipping.
